Welcome to Mountain View Lutheran!

What We Believe

God loves the people of the world, even though all have sinned and turned away from Him. In His mercy, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who suffered and died to win forgiveness and eternal life for all. Those who hear this Good News and believe it receive the gift of life with Him forever.

The Bible is God’s true and trustworthy Word, revealing His Law and the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the foundation for all that we believe and teach.

At Mountain View Lutheran, we joyfully share this saving grace through worship, Bible study, youth and family ministries, and fellowship. Together we gather around God’s Word and Sacraments, encouraging one another in faith and living in the hope and joy we have in Christ.

Who is Jesus?

We believe that Jesus is exactly who He said He is. With the historic Christian Church, we confess that Jesus is both true God and true man. He is the Son of God who was crucified and raised from the dead for the salvation of all who trust in Him.

Jesus is the Christ - the promised Messiah and fulfillment of God’s Old Testament promise to save His people. His life, death, and resurrection happened in real history through a real person in first-century Israel.

The Bible is God’s true and trustworthy Word, faithfully recording the life and teachings of Jesus. He came to earth, died on the cross, rose from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven.

We now await His return, when He will judge the living and the dead. All who trust in Him will rise to eternal life.

What is Baptism?

Baptism may look simple - just water - but Christians believe God uses this simple act to do something powerful. When someone is baptized, God connects His promise to the water and welcomes that person into His family.

In the Bible, Baptism is described as a new beginning. Through it, God forgives sins, gives new life through Jesus, and assures us that we belong to Him. It is not something we earn or achieve, but a gift God freely gives.

Christians baptize because Jesus Himself encouraged it and promised that through it God is at work in our lives.

“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” (Mark 16:16)

What is Communion (The Lord’s Supper)?

Christians believe that everyone needs God’s forgiveness and grace. In Communion, Jesus gives us a special gift to strengthen our faith and remind us of His love for us.

On the night before He died, Jesus shared a meal with His disciples and said, “This is my body… this is my blood… given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” Christians have continued this meal ever since, following His command to remember Him.

In the Lord’s Supper, we receive bread and wine along with Christ’s promise of forgiveness, grace, and new life. Lutherans believe that Jesus is truly present in this meal, just as He promised.

Communion is one of the ways God strengthens us in faith and reminds us that we belong to Him.

Have Questions?

If you’re interested in an in-person explanation of what we believe, we offer a class multiple times a year called On-Ramp. This class is designed to give you more information about the Christian faith and beliefs and how they are lived out at Mountain View Lutheran.

Another great resource to answer many popular questions is the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod website.

If you still have questions, please reach out! We are here to help you, no question is off the table! Just email your questions to the Church Office, and we will make sure you get an answer. You can also set up a time to meet with one of our pastors if you prefer a face-to-face conversation about what we believe!

Our History

Mountain View Lutheran Church was founded in 1957 near downtown Las Vegas. After moving to Charleston and Decatur, the congregation thrived, and by 1991 voted to add a preschool. Together, the church and preschool quickly outgrew the Decatur location.

Only three years after opening the preschool's doors, the decision was made to break ground on a new church and school campus. The new (and current) location opened in 1997, with the intention to start an elementary school. A supportive church congregation held services in the new gymnasium until the current sanctuary was constructed, centered around a vast stained-glass window impossible for passers-by to miss when driving down West Cheyenne Ave. School bells signaled the first day for our inaugural Kindergarten class in August of 1998. Each new year added another grade to the school until that initial class graduated fifth grade.

Through thoughtful prayer, dedication, and generous giving from our congregation Mountain View Lutheran Church and School began remodeling the campus in April of 2022! With excited and grateful hearts we look to the future of what God has planned for our community as we move FORWARD IN FREEDOM!
